Antique Portuguese Seal Press

245,00

An ornate cast-iron blind embossing press with a bronze-coloured finish and raised floral decoration. From a Portuguese manor-house collection and traditionally associated with a noble family, it is believed to date from the late 19th or very early 20th century.

SKU: PC58 Category:

An imposing antique blind embossing seal press, made from substantial cast iron and finished in a warm bronze colour. Its sculptural body is enriched with raised flowers, scrolling foliage and finely moulded borders, while the long curved handle gives the piece an especially elegant silhouette.

Presses of this type were used to create a raised, ink-free seal on correspondence, certificates and official documents. This example comes from a historic Portuguese manor house and is traditionally associated with a Portuguese noble family, although the precise armorial device and family attribution have not been independently identified.

The surface displays an attractive, naturally aged patina, with rubbing, paint loss, oxidation and other signs of prolonged use. These marks are consistent with its age and history, and the press remains in very good antique condition overall.

A characterful piece of Portuguese social history, equally appealing as an antique office collectible, library ornament or distinctive decorative object.
