Antique Gilt Lacquer Box

215,00

A tiny antique lacquered wooden box with wonderfully faded gold decoration depicting winged figures, foliage and elaborate ornament. Probably Continental European, c. 1790–1830, with beautiful untouched patina and historic Portuguese manor house provenance.

A fascinating miniature antique wooden box with a dark lacquered finish and wonderfully aged gold decoration, probably dating from around 1790–1830.

The cylindrical body is decorated with winged or angelic figures, scrolling foliage, urns and intricate ornamental motifs. One particularly unusual figure wears an elaborate headdress, giving the decoration an enigmatic character. The imagery may reflect the European taste for exotic, allegorical and grotesque ornament associated with lacquered and japanned decorative objects of the 18th and early 19th centuries.

Condition: This is a genuinely aged object and its condition reflects its considerable history. The original lid pull/knob is missing, leaving a small hole in the centre of the lid. There is a small area of damage to the rim. The gold decoration is extensively faded and rubbed, with surface wear, craquelure, marks and patina throughout. Please study the photographs carefully, as these signs of age are an important part of its character.

The precise original function is unknown, although its very small dimensions suggest a personal trinket, keepsake or similar small box.

Provenance: historic Portuguese manor house.
