An unusual antique floral shadow box, probably dating from circa 1890–1910.
At the centre is a three-dimensional handmade bouquet arranged in a charming miniature woven basket. The flowers, leaves and stems appear to combine finely cut paper, leather and delicate natural fibres or wood shavings, individually shaped, curled and assembled by hand.
The deep wooden shadow-box frame is decorated with raised floral motifs, braided borders and four sculptural corner rosettes, all finished in warm brown tones. The arrangement is protected behind glass and displayed against a softly faded blue-green background.
Sourced from a historic Portuguese manor house, this distinctive piece has the timeworn character and individuality associated with antique European folk art.
It remains in good antique condition. There is visible age-related rubbing, cracking and scattered surface loss to the decorated frame, together with wear and marks to the backing board. One leaf has become detached but remains safely loose inside the frame, allowing it to be sympathetically reattached if desired.
A wonderfully atmospheric piece for a botanical gallery wall, country-house interior, romantic bedroom or collection of antique folk art.
