Portuguese Faience Flower Basket

165,00

Finely moulded Portuguese faience basket, attributed to Caldas da Rainha, with a beige wicker effect and delicate applied flowers in relief, circa 1900–1930.

An exquisitely detailed Portuguese faience basket, attributed to the ceramic tradition of Caldas da Rainha. Its shallow oval body is finely moulded to imitate woven wicker, glazed in warm beige tones and embellished with delicate applied flowers in relief.

The remarkably intricate modelling gives the piece an almost lace-like quality, while its restrained neutral palette allows it to sit beautifully in both traditional and contemporary interiors. It would make a charming display piece for a cabinet, console table, dressing table or carefully arranged collection of Portuguese ceramics.

Believed to date from the early decades of the 20th century, the basket comes from a historic Portuguese manor house, where it had been preserved as part of the household collection.

The attribution and dating are based on its form, decoration and comparison with documented examples and should be regarded as informed rather than definitive.
